The cost of the expansion of the American West was frequently paid in sacrifice and lost lives. On November 29, 1864, 700 American soldiers killed 400 Cheyenne and Arapaho men, women, and children at their encampment in eastern Colorado. The unarmed inhabitants of the camp had no chance to escape.

I wanted to memorialize this event since learning of it decades ago and insisted that the piece to be a poignant reminder without sensationalism. I mulled this composition for years before finally finding my motivation in Michelangelo’s Pietà.

Native American

Most of us history buffs began our love of Western lore after reading the stories of Native Americans surviving as their ancestral lands were consumed as the U.S. pushed west. These noble, often tragic, subjects are sources of some of my greatest inspiration. I research all the period clothes, accoutrements, and weaponry before I sculpt…but then sometimes take a little license to tell the stories properly. (I am an artist, after all!)

Each one of these pieces has the common theme of refusal to live by another man’s leave. Those of you that feel the same way know who you are!

Coolin’ the Dogs and Dusty

Coolin’ the Dogs and Dusty are among my most popular works. Coolin’ depicts an early frontiersman taking a break from the toils of the day with a much-needed foot soak. His trusty horse, Dusty, stands close by also enjoying a break. Due to the high interest level in this piece, I offer several versions in different sizes.

Undoubtedly, this was a scene that played out thousands of times during the expansion of the American West. Money was scarce and life was hard, so holes in boots and socks and aching feet were surely a common phenomenon.I wanted to give viewers a chance to step back into time for a glimpse of the toils early ranchers endured in order to live a lifestyle they loved.

Western

There are so many stories to tell about the American West of the 1800’s.  Which ones appeal to you the most? [University of Texas clients, I know, I know... the longhorn is your favorite!]

Lady Wranglers

Once again, I’ve found inspiration in tough, effective women who know how to get the job done. I am pleased to introduce Sun’s Up, Boys, the inaugural sculpture of my newest series, Lady Wranglers.

Saloon Girls

You may be surprised, but in many ways these ladies are semi-autobiographical for me. They are tough–they have to be–but still haven’t lost their humanity, even during challenging times. I end up pouring much of myself into each one of the Girls, and get such a charge when I see my collectors react to them strongly. I guess there is a little rebel in all of us, isn’t there?

If you would like to read more about the Girls, please check out Cactus Creek Daily. The blog’s author, Fancy Smith, has a dandy write-up on them.

Classical & Romantic

As a student of the human form, I often work in a more classical, representational style to study anatomy and movement. These are some of my favorite works and I use the knowledge I gain from each classical sculpture to enhance my Western and Native American imagery. I always sculpt the body of my subject first, and then add clothes to the completed entity to get the true-to-life look my collectors seek.
