In 2004, with the encouragement of my supportive wife JoAnn, I made the move from part-time to full-time artist. You can probably imagine how risky it felt to leave my day job to focus on creating fine art, but I’m so glad that I did. Every day is a joy!
I am filled with appreciation for my clients who choose my work to reflect their love of art and history. Thank you for your interest in my sculpture.

Welcome to Craig Bergsgaard’s Old West

Capturing the West in Bronze Sculpture

Western Sculpture Artist Craig Bergsgaard – The West is a land of broad rivers and vast deserts, deep canyons and impenetrable mountains, boundless prairies and endless forests. A place where towering monoliths and boiling waters rise naturally from the earth.
It is landscapes and vistas that have to be seen to be believed, and often have to be believed to be seen. Ken Burns, PBS “The West”
These words resonate with me as an artist, as well as me personally.
My western sculpture has evolved into portraying the individual characters, fictional or otherwise, as the free spirits, adventurers, wanders and despots that made up the collective flavor of the period.
I simply, just love it …
My images primarily portray a lifestyle, that at times, focuses on the sacrifices they were willing to make or that were often forced upon them. I encourage you to visit my Sculpture Gallery to see what I see.

I believe I was meant to be an artist – though it took me a while to get the hint.
From the time I left active military service in 1977, I worked in residential construction. After building houses all day, I would devote hours every night to woodworking. My house became stuffed full of custom furniture before I realized that I had been ignoring a stronger creative urge.
A friend of mine who is an art teacher suggested in the mid-1990’s that I give sculpting a try. I was surprised at how comfortable I felt with the art form. I have never really looked back: with each passing sculpture, my appreciation of the medium and living forms has grown.

THE TALE OF THE SHORT BRANCH

a Photo Book by Craig Bergsgaard

The Short Branch Saloon – Perhaps Asa’s skills as a cowboy are exceeded only by his cunning as a poker player. Or maybe it was the luck the ladies of the Short Branch Saloon brought as they nestled by his side at the round table. The tale is still told how the deed to the saloon was at stake on the last raise.

WESTERN PRINTS

The ladies, Issy, Hope, Ginger and Ettie held their collective breaths as Asa laid down his cards on the table. With a royal flush Asa swept the table of chips and won the deed to the saloon
